In a thrilling display of last-second heroics, Max Strus of the Cleveland Cavaliers secured a dramatic 121-119 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on February 27th, 2024. The contest was a tightly contested affair, with both teams exchanging leads throughout. Luka Doncic led the charge for the Mavericks early, but the Cavaliers persevered.

With the clock winding down and Mavericks leading 119-118, the pressure mounted on the Cavaliers. In a moment of desperation, Strus received the inbound pass near his own free throw line. With Doncic closing in, he audaciously launched a seemingly impossible shot from half court. The ball arced through the air, defying expectations, and found the net as the buzzer sounded. Cavaliers won and the match-winning effort instantly made him a hero to the fans.

MAX STRUS TOOK A NON-TRADITIONAL ROUTE TO NBA STARDOM

Born in 1996, the 6’6″ shooting guard embarked on a non-traditional path. Despite playing for two colleges, Lewis and DePaul, Strus went undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Undeterred, Strus signed a two-way contract with the Miami Heat in 2020, effectively a split between the NBA and their G League affiliate. He quickly gained a reputation for his relentless work ethic, sharp shooting, and defensive hustle. His dedication caught the eye of the coaching staff, eventually earning him a regular roster spot alongside the likes of Jimmy Butler.

Over three seasons with the Heat, Strus carved out a niche as a reliable role player, contributing valuable minutes with timely baskets and tenacious defense against some of the league’s best scorers. His ability to thrive in pressure situations earned him the nickname “Max Strussel” among fans, a testament to his clutch play.

Seeking a more prominent role, Strus was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in February 2024. He seamlessly integrated into the Cavs system, and his impact was immediate.
