Canelo, the four-belt champion at 168 will be seen in action not two, but three times this year, with two out of the three fights having been confirmed already. First, Canelo will return to light heavyweight to take on WBA (Super) champ Dmitry Bivol on May 7th, which will be followed by the highly anticipated trilogy bout against unified middleweight world champion Gennadiy Golovkin, which is targeted for September which will see Canelo defending his undisputed crown against his rival “GGG”.
Even though there is no confirmation on whom Canelo will take on in December, the pound for pound king himself recently expressed his wish to take on the winner of unified WBC and IBF champion Artur Beterbiev vs WBO titleholder Joe Smith Jr, a fight which is planned for this summer and will crown the new, three belt champion at light heavyweight.
Eddie Hearn had also picked former WBA interim super middleweight titleholder John Ryder as a probable option for Canelo, as well as the winner of Joshua Buatsi vs Craig Richards, the all-British light heavyweight encounter targeted for May 21st.
Speaking to TalkSport Boxing, Eddie Hearn revealed that Canelo, as well as his trainer Eddy Reynoso are willing to have their December fight in either London or Guadalajara and have even asked the Briton to scout the venue options.
“Canelo Alvarez and Eddy Reynoso both want to fight in December,” said Hearn. “They’ve asked me to look at options for Guadalajara and London. You’ve got John Ryder, who is [WBA] mandatory at 168 pounds and you’ve got the winner of this fight [Buatsi vs. Richards].”
