In a surprising move during the 2024 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints selected quarterback Spencer Rattler with the 150th overall pick. Rattler’s selection ended a drought of quarterbacks picked in the draft, making him a notable addition to the Saints’ roster.
Spencer Rattler’s Road to NFL
Spencer Rattler’s path to the NFL has been anything but straightforward. The 6-foot, 211-pound quarterback began his college career at the University of Oklahoma, where he showed promise as a star quarterback. However, during the 2021 season, he was benched in favor of Caleb Williams, who would later become the number one overall pick in the 2024 draft.
After OU head coach Lincoln Riley departed for USC in 2022, taking Williams with him, Rattler entered the NCAA transfer portal. He eventually landed at the University of South Carolina, where he played more games (25) than during his time at Oklahoma (23). In 2023, Spencer Rattler threw for 3,186 yards, completed 68.9% of his passes, and accounted for 23 total touchdowns (19 passing, four rushing) with only eight interceptions.

Leading up to the draft, Spencer Rattler was widely regarded as a mid-round quarterback prospect. Draft Wire’s Natalie Miller placed him at the lower end of the top 75 players, ranking him 67th out of 75. Despite facing adversity during his college career, Rattler possesses raw talent and potential. As a developmental project, he could benefit from learning under a veteran presence in the Saints’ quarterback room.
The Saints’ decision to draft Rattler at 150th overall indicates their belief in his ability to grow and contribute. While he may not be an immediate starter, his journey from Oklahoma to South Carolina has prepared him for the challenges of the NFL. Saints fans will be watching closely as Rattler continues his football odyssey in the black and gold.
