Brock Purdy recently steered the San Francisco 49ers to a comeback victory against the Detroit Lions 34-31 in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game to reach Super Bowl LVIII. This marks their second appearance in the Big Game since the head coach and general manager Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch respectively took over in 2017.

Purdy is set to compete for a Lombardi Trophy in just his second year in the NFL. He was turned out to be a comeback win, leading five straight scoring drives in the second half to erase a 7-24 deficit.

Brock Purdy played a pivotal role in the comeback

Brock Purdy returned with 20 of 31 passes completed for 267 yards and a touchdown to Brandon Aiyuk against an interception to Malcolm Rodriguez. After the game, fans of both the 49ers and the league praised Purdy. One thing that has been surprising for the fans is how the Comeback Player of The Year award has eluded him.

Running back Christian McCaffrey, who carried the ball 20 times for 90 yards and two touchdowns helped the quarterback, who rushed five times for 48 yards, while Elijah Mitchell also scored late in the fourth for a 34-24 lead.

It has been noted that Deebo Samuel led the way with eight catches for 89 yards, while Brandon Aiyuk had three for 68, including Purdy’s only touchdown pass of the night. McCaffrey himself caught four for 14, while fullback Kyle Juszczyk and tight end George Kittle combined for 60 on four grabs between them.

The Lions tried to tie or win the game after a Jameson Williams score cut the deficit to 31-34. However, they failed to recover.

Fans react

Here are some of the reactions to Brock Purdy’s performance:

@Dorsett_4: “This man tore his UCL in the NFC Championship game last year, came back the next year and put up MVP numbers in the regular season, and led his team to the Super Bowl… And people still gon say he’s not that good 🤦🏾‍♂️”

@tvham: “Seriously, Brock’s story is something everyone should rally around but instead people just throw shade at him.”

@TheRFLShow: “And he isn’t even considered for comeback player of the year”

@neekduce2: “Rather than building an incredible comeback story everyone’s focused on discrediting him. I don’t get it. He’s not supposed to be doing this. He’s supposed to be a lifetime 3rd string who should’ve never even touched the field to begin with.”

@TPot8toe: “he is also one of the most humble, nicest players in the league. idk why so many people hate him”
