Tennis legend Boris Becker has been deemed guilty of multiple charges related to bankruptcy by a London court. As a result, he may face prison term.

BORIS BECKER HAS BEEN ACCUSED OF FAILING TO HAND OVER ASSETS TO CREDITORS

Becker was declared bankrupt by Bankruptcy and Companies Court, London, in June 2017. His lawyers claimed diplomatic immunity owing to his role as the Central African Republic’s Attaché for Sports/Humanitarian/Cultural Affairs in the European Union. However, a representative from the African nation dismissed him as an official representative of CAR.

In July 2019, the Tennis legend was instructed to sell his trophies and memorabilia to help pay his creditors. While many of these were reportedly sold, he was later charged for hiding or not handing over some of his trophies. He was accused of hiding trophies worth millions of pounds, including two of his Wimbledon trophies.

THE TENNIS LEGEND MAY FACE SEVEN YEARS IN JAIL

While the Southwark Crown Court found him guilty on multiple charges, including unlawful removal of property, he was provided conditional bail until April 29, the date of the final sentence. The former Wimbledon champion faces, in the worst case, seven years in jail.

The court, amongst other charges, found him guilty of transferring considerable amount of money to accounts of his family members. Becker was also charged with failing to notify the court about a property he owned in Germany. While he agreed that he earned a large amount during his illustrious playing career, which saw him become the youngest Wimbledon champion, he argued that earnings had dried out after his retirement, and that an expensive divorce caused further difficulty.

BECKER WON SIX GRAND SLAMS THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER

The plan for Becker’s parents “for me was to finish school, go to university, get a proper degree and learn something respectful. The last thing on everyone’s mind was me becoming a tennis professional.” However, after his Wimbledon victory as a teenager, and the follow-up with another win at Cincinnati Open, he became one of the most popular tennis players in the world. He won six grand slams throughout his career, including three wins at Wimbledon.
