San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has informed everyone on the franchise, including quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, that the forthcoming QB position belongs to Trey Lance. This approach came following the 49ers granting Jimmy Garoppolo the green signal to look for another team.

We have moved on to Trey. This is Trey’s team,” Shanahan told ESPN, “That’s nothing against Jimmy. We made that decision a year ago and we’re going with that. We’re not going to mess around with that anymore. Jimmy understands that fully. That’s a business decision and that’s what makes it not awkward. Jimmy knows we’re going with Trey. Trey knows we’re going with Trey and our team does, and everyone likes both of those guys.”

On Tuesday morning, Garoppolo met with Shanahan as well as GM John Lynch to talk about his future with the team. Garoppolo is still retrieving from the shoulder surgery he had in March but he is free to practice. He clinched two Super Bowls as a backup QB for the New England Patriots. Garoppolo would resume looking for a team that wants to obtain the 49ers’ QB while the veteran continues to recover from his surgery.

“We spoke when he left and we had a pretty good understanding of what was going on, and because of the surgery and the ramifications of that in other teams’ eyes, nothing has transpired as of yet,” Lynch was quoted by ESPN on the matter, “But he’s here, he’s reported, we’ll see what happens in the physical and we’ll move forward accordingly.”

Garoppolo passed his first three years from 2014 to 2017 with the Patriots. Throughout the season of 2017, he was traded to the 49ers midway, and from that time he has been the primary quarterback of the squad. Owing to several injuries his presence in the team was irregular he but achieved success with the team leading to the 2019 Super Bowl and the 2022 NFC Championship game appearances.

The 49ers chose Trey Lance No. 3 overall in the NFL draft in April 2021. Last year, he made six appearances for the 49ers and threw for 603 yards along with five touchdowns and two interceptions. He also clocked 168 rushing yards and one touchdown on 38 carries.
