San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy recently found himself in an unexpected role: coyote rescuer. While filming a John Deere commercial on a hill outside the city, Purdy spotted a potentially dangerous situation involving a local news anchor and her dog.
Brock Purdy’s Encounter with a Coyote
Purdy and his teammate Colton McKivitz were filming the commercial in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights Park. As they worked, Purdy noticed a large coyote trotting by. His keen eye caught the creature’s distinctive tail.
Realizing the potential danger, Purdy didn’t hesitate. He shouted, “Yo, there’s a coyote!” His warning echoed across the hillside. The coyote, startled by Purdy’s shout, bolted away. The situation could have turned ugly, but thanks to Purdy’s intervention, disaster was averted.
Sara Donchey, the news anchor for KPIX-TV, was walking her dog near the commercial shoot. She and her 90-pound Doberman, Hiwa, unknowingly came close to the coyote. Donchey later reflected that if it had come down to a confrontation, she and Hiwa would have stood their ground against the wild animal.
But fate intervened. As Donchey approached the film location, a crew member informed her, “Hey, Brock Purdy saved your life.” Purdy’s timely warning had kept her safe.
Donchey also noted something unexpected about Purdy: his powerful voice. She said, “I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised with how loud he shouted because he has to do that on the field every play. He had really great projection with his voice. I am thoroughly impressed and, I must say, I underestimated that part about Brock Purdy as a professional skill.”
In retrospect, Purdy’s heroism not only protected Donchey and Hiwa but possibly saved the coyote from a harsher fate. His actions remind us that heroes can emerge in unexpected places, even during a routine commercial shoot.
