The upcoming fight between Vergil Ortiz Jr and Eimantas Stanionis has been slapped with a postponement again and has been rescheduled for July 8th at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The event will be part of a pay per view that will be broadcasted on DAZN. The fight will be a duel between two undefeated fighters- Ortiz has 19 wins to his name, all by knockouts while Staniones has made 9 knockouts in his 14 wins.

Ortiz vs. Stanionis was originally scheduled for March 18th, but Staninones had to be operated on for appendicitis. It was rescheduled for April 29, but Ortiz suffered a bout of rhabdomyolysis and the match had to be postponed again.

Óscar De la Hoya had already announced Ortiz’s return in July a couple of weeks back.

“It’s very unfortunate that Vergil Ortiz got sick on us, but we wish him a speedy recovery,” De La Hoya had said during the William Zepeda vs Jaime Arboleda press conference in late April. “He’s on the verge of getting a lot better, and we will have him back sometime in July. We’re really looking forward to that. But, in the meantime, we have a very special card for you on Saturday night.” [H/T Bad Left Hook]

The welterweight division’s newest sensation Vergil Ortiz Jr is now 17-0 in his professional career.

The WBO international champion has won all of his fights via knockout, including his latest victory against Maurice Hooker yesterday.

Returning to the squared circle after eight months, Ortiz clinched a 7th round TKO victory over the former WBO light welterweight champion, as Hooker dislocated his elbow while trying to defend his opponent’s barrage of body shots, and went down to the canvas.

Such a staggering victory has garnered eyeballs from every corner of the global boxing fandom, while speculations have come forward regarding who Ortiz Jr should fight next.

Vergil Ortiz Jr “more than ready” to fight Terence Crawford

Knockout artist: All 17 of Vergil Ortiz Jr’s victories have come via knockouts.

As of now, the names of Errol Spence Jr and Terence “Bud” Crawford are doing rounds as both were present during the fight at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas and the latter’s name has gained pace since Vergil Ortiz Jr himself called Crawford out following the win.

I’m ready for a title shot. I’m not going to call anyone a bum. I would love that opportunity. Crawford is pound for pound. If I’m given the opportunity. I’m looking at you, Bud,” Ortiz said after the fight.

While his career is dominated by only knockout victories, the former WBC-NABF Junior super lightweight and WBA Gold welterweight titleholder feels a title fight against the WBO welterweight champ would go the other way around, as he expressed in a recent exclusive interview with BoxingScene.

“I don’t think I could take out Terence Crawford like that if we fought,” Ortiz said in the interview, “If we do end up fighting, it will probably go the distance in a great, competitive fight.”

While he may be skeptical about chances of knocking out or going the distance against “Bud”, Ortiz does express that he is nothing but prepared to have a world title shot.

“Let’s make the fight happen,” the young pugilist from Dallas went on, “I’m more than ready. There’s no one really willing to fight [Crawford]. I’m ready.”

A former lineal lightweight and unified light-welterweight champion, Terence Crawford has been WBO’s titleholder at 147, since winning the belt against Jeff Horn in June of that year.

Until now, Crawford has registered four successful title defenses, all of them coming via TKO. His most recent boxing match dates back to November last year when he defeated Kell Brook in the 4th round at the MGM Grand Conference Center.

Welterweight’s rising phenomenon Vergil Ortiz Jr (17-0, 17KOs) made a daunting statement in the squared circle against Maurice Hooker (27-2-3, 18KOs), dropping the former WBO light welterweight champion within seven rounds.

The 147 title fight, held at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas in front of a massive crowd presence including Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford, saw Ortiz Jr clinching the vacant WBO International title.

Vergil Ortiz Jr wins WBO international welterweight title as Maurice Hooker went down in 7th with an elbow injury

Vergil Ortiz Jr is becoming a venerated knockout artiest at 147. (Image Courtesy: DAZN)

The fight started with both pugilists trading heavy jabs in the early first round. Ortiz Jr was able to make connections with some clean body shots and hooks, however, Hooker did some impressive counterwork in the next three rounds.

In the fifth, Ortiz landed heavy shots which were doing its effects on Hooker, as both fighters were exchanging combinations at the center of the ring. Towards the end of the sixth round, a staggering body shot, followed by an assault from Ortiz got Hooker hitting the canvas, but was able to beat the count at 8.

However, Ortiz drew conclusion in the seventh round, starting early offense including two massive left jabs, followed by connecting with body shot once more while Hooker, trying to defend himself from the body attack, dislocated his elbow and went down.

Ortiz continues his unbeaten professional runs, and the win also marks his 17th knockout victory. Remarkably, all of the 22-year-old’s wins have come as either a KO or a TKO.

Following the fight, Ortiz revealed that he was targeting body shots because connecting to Hooker’s head was not doing any impact at all. However, with a convincing victory, Ortiz feels that he is ready for a title shot and his gaze is on Crawford.

I’m ready for a title shot. I’m not going to call anyone a bum. I would love that opportunity. Crawford is pound for pound. If I’m given the opportunity. I’m looking at you, Bud,” said Ortiz.

Hooker, on the other hand, opines that Ortiz is not ready for a title fight yet: “He’s good, but he’s not ready, to be honest.” Despite his elbow dislocation, “Mighty Mo” was at the receiving end of the booing from the crowd and had the choicest of words for it.

“I hurt my hand. For everyone that’s booing, f*** y’all,” the 31-year-old uttered before flipping the bird to the crowd.

A former WBC-NABF Junior super lightweight champion, Ortiz Jr won the vacant WBA Gold welterweight in August 2019 against Antonio Orozco and defended the title twice against Brad Solomon and Samuel Vargas.
