Jaime Munguía retains Intercontinental title with a lip-busting uppercut to Tureano Johnson

The fight was stopped in round 6 after Munguía landed a stomping right uppercut to Tureano Johnson, busting the 36-year-old veteran’s lip open in the process.

The injury triggered a doctor’s stoppage and Munguía successfully maintained his middleweight title as well as his undefeated streak, advancing to 36-0 with 29 KOs, while Johnson is now 21-3-1 with 15 KOs.

After capturing the capture the WBO Junior Middleweight World Title in the 154-pound division against Sadam “World Kid” Ali in May 2018, Munguía successfully defended his title five times against the likes of  Liam “Beefy” Smith, Brandon “Bad Boy” Cook, Takeshi Inoue, Dennis Hogan and Patrick Allotey.

Munguía aims for another title defense in January

After moving up to 160 pounds, the 24-year old clinched the Intercontinental Middleweight Title versus Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan back in January this year. Following his first successful Intercontinental title defense, Munguía asserted that he is aiming for a world title bout.

“He surprised me with his pressure. But I adjusted and landed inside. The uppercuts were very important,” Munguía said after the victory.

The Mexican also said that he desires another title defense in January next year and threw a challenge at the other pugilists of the weight division.

“I want another fight in January, and then potentially a world title fight. “I want any of the 160-pound champs. Any (of them) would be great for me,” the champion added.
