Ohtani served as the opener for the Dodgers in their 6-3 win over the San Diego Padres at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. He pitched the first inning of the game and looked a bit rusty, allowing two hits and an earned run.

More importantly, Ohtani appeared to have plenty of strength in his surgically repaired elbow. He threw 28 pitches and even topped 100 mph with his fastball.

Ohtani was also his usual self at the plate, as he went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a walk.

Following the game, Ohtani shared some photos from his outing on Instagram. He captioned the post “I’m back.”

Ohtani underwent surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow in Sept. 2023. That operation marked his second major surgery on his pitching elbow after a Tommy John procedure in 2018.

The Dodgers had said they hoped Ohtani would return to pitching in MLB games after the All-Star break, which is the week of July 15. That makes Ohtani nearly a month ahead of schedule, which is a good sign.

Ohtani is now batting .300 on the season with 25 home runs, 43 RBI and a 1.039 OPS. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has said anything the five-time All-Star can give the team as a pitcher is “additive,” so Ohtani will likely be brought along slowly.

Mizuhara, 40, was required to report to federal authorities by Monday and is now in custody.

Originally scheduled to begin his sentence in March, Mizuhara was granted a delay by a federal judge, though the reasons for that delay remain confidential. In February, he was sentenced to 57 months in prison after pleading guilty to federal charges of tax and bank fraud. Mizuhara admitted to embezzling approximately \$17 million from Ohtani’s accounts, allegedly to pay off gambling debts to an illegal bookmaker. Evidence also surfaced of Mizuhara impersonating Ohtani in a recorded phone call to a bank in an attempt to authorize a large wire transfer.

Following his prison term, Mizuhara may be deported to Japan. The bookmaker involved in the case, Matthew Bowyer, has also pleaded guilty to federal charges.

The Los Angeles Dodgers sensation Ohtani will progress this weekend to facing live hitters, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reported on Friday. Ardaya notes that this is the very first time that Ohtani will face live hitters ever since his Sept. 2023 surgery on his right elbow.

Ohtani, who turns 31 years old in July, has not pitched at all for the Dodgers ever since his arrival before the 2024 season. The Dodgers are also exercising significant caution with Ohtani, especially since this is his second major surgery on his throwing elbow (after a 2018 Tommy John procedure).

The four-time MLB All-Star Ohtani continues to be a world-beater, even as just a one-way player for the time being. As the Dodgers’ full-time designated hitter, Ohtani won NL MVP last year on the strength of MLB’s first-ever 50-homer, 50-stolen base season. Ohtani is still ripping this season as well with 17 home runs and 31 RBIs on a .304/.398/.655 slash line through 48 games.

The celebration apparently was in response to some of his Dodgers teammates mocking him over the gesture he does in an advertisement for a skin care product from Decorte.

The only thing missing was Ohtani doing the wink.

But here’s the thing: this has caught on and become the Dodgers’ new celebration gesture. In the past, Dodgers players would wave their arms back and forth. They’ve since replaced that with the Ohtani Decorte face wipe.

The people at Decorte have to be loving this. The gesture Ohtani did in one of their commercials has now become the celebration for the Dodgers. You can’t buy that type of publicity.
