The excitement has gone off the roof after Stephen Curry challenged WNBA 3-point contest winner Sabrina Ionescu.

During the Warriors’ pre-game warmup, Stephen Curry asked rookie Brandin Podziemski about the record holder for most points in a 3-point competition, and Podziemski promptly answered Sabrina Ionescu. Amused by the response, Curry, inspired by the idea, expressed his desire to bring Ionescu into the competition, stating, “We gotta settle this once and for all.”

Steph: "Ooooooh! … We got to settle this once and for all. I think I got to challenge her. It'd be lit." 👀pic.twitter.com/BkWkvmtOiU

Stephen Curry wants to face Sabrina Ionescu and take back the “Sharpshooter” record to his name

Stephen Curry, known for his sharpshooting skills, currently holds the NBA 3-point contest record for the highest-scoring round. However, Sabrina Ionescu, a standout player for the New York Liberty in the WNBA, made headlines by breaking Curry’s record in the WNBA 3-point contest last year.

While Curry remains the record holder for the NBA 3-point contest with 31 points in the first round in 2021 and a two-time champion (2015 and 2021), Ionescu’s remarkable feat of scoring 37 points in the final round of the WNBA contest last year surpassed all 3-point contest records. Ionescu missed just 2 shots in her iconic performance as she went on to lift the 3-point contest trophy.

Encouraged by this, Stephen Curry exclaimed, “It’ll be lit.” signaling his eagerness to take on the WNBA star in a unique 3-point contest showdown.

Despite being in different leagues, Stephen Curry expressed his interest in attempting to beat Ionescu’s record, setting the stage for a potential head-to-head competition in a separate event. As the participants for this year’s 3-point contest are yet to be announced, fans are hopeful to see Curry’s name in the mix, as Curry aims to take the record back to his name.

The prospect of witnessing two shooting legends go head-to-head in a one-of-a-kind 3-point contest has captured the imagination of basketball enthusiasts, adding an extra layer of anticipation to the upcoming All-Star Weekend.

Ionescu have recently left the third professional season and was named to the Second Team group along with Sylvia Fowles of Minnesota, Los Angeles’ Nneka Ogwumike, and the WNBA Finals-competing partners of Jonquel Jones and Alyssa Thomas, each standing for the Connecticut Sun. She becomes the first Liberty nominee to any All-WNBA Team following Tina Charles in 2017.

“I’m honored to be named to the All-WNBA Second Team alongside some of the league’s very best,” Ionescu stated from the team. “Coming into this year healthy was a difference-maker, and I feel like we’ve only scratched the surface as to what we can accomplish together. As exciting as this award is, I’m even more excited for the future of the New York Liberty organization.”

Possibly, the 2022 season was the official introduction of the Association to Ionescu’s full capability following her initial two seasons were spoiled by injuries.

This season as one of two New Yorkers to appear in all 36 Liberty games, Ionescu led the team in scoring (17.4 per game), assists (6.3), and defensive rebounds (6.1), which were good for eighth, second, and fifth in the league correspondingly.

Moreover, Ionescu set in the history of WNBA with two triple-doubles this season, joining Chicago’s Candace Parker as both the only players to earn multiple triple-doubles in the similar constant season and the only to pull off the feat thrice in their careers.

Earlier accolades for Ionescu’s season consisted of her first WNBA All-Star Game nomination (where she earned a victory in the Skills Challenge), two Eastern Conference Player of the Month Awards, and a First Team nod from the Associated Press. Presently, Ionescu is competing in the American training effort for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, which apprise in Sydney on 22nd September.

Such efforts got noticed by a Liberty group that improved its win total by four (16-20), create its first playoff appearance streak since 2015-17, and though steal a playoff win in a best-of-three set with defending champion Chicago.

“I think she’s more vocal for sure. She’s taking ownership of that on the court,” said Liberty veteran Sami Whitcomb about Ionescu later in the season. “She’s been trying to lead by example…I definitely think she’s stepping into a (leader’s) role.”

“I think Sabrina is still a young player, still a second year…she’s still learning, but I think she realized she is a pretty good player,” Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello said of Ionescu, who missed all but three games of her rookie campaign. “She’s shown the potential she has. She’s put a lot on her back and she’s up for the challenge … her poise to handle whatever she’s thrown, I’m happy and impressed with that.”
