Paris Saint-Germain confirmed their place atop European football with a nervy, dramatic victory over Arsenal in Budapest, securing a second consecutive UEFA Champions League title. After 120 minutes ended 1-1, the final slipped into a tension-soaked penalty shootout where PSG’s composure edged out Arsenal 4-3 — a result that both caps a successful transitional era for the French club and leaves the Gunners ruing a cruel miss.

The match itself was a study in contrasts. PSG controlled large swathes of possession, probing with a fluid midfield and inventive wide play that frequently unsettled Arsenal’s backline. Yet Arsenal, organized and disciplined, repeatedly neutralized the most dangerous moments. William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães led a defensive display full of timely interceptions, aerial dominance, and calm recovery runs that frustrated PSG’s attempts to break the compact lines.

Arsenal’s strategy was clear: absorb, disrupt, and strike when openings appeared. It nearly paid off. The Gunners matched intensity with clinical counterattacks, and when the breakthrough came, both sides produced moments of quality that reflected the stakes. PSG’s attacking impetus, underpinned by the dynamism of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and incisive link-up play, found the net once; Arsenal’s resilience earned them an equaliser that forced extra time.

Extra time intensified the drama without resolving it. Fatigue crept into both squads, substitutions reshaped patterns, and tactical caution grew as managers weighed the risk of chasing a late winner against the minefield of a shootout. Neither side could deliver a decisive blow, and so fate turned to spot kicks — a stage that would highlight PSG’s mental readiness and Arsenal’s heartbreaking misfortune.

The shootout hinged on nerve and precision. PSG converted four of their attempts, while Arsenal matched them step for step until the fifth kick. Gabriel Magalhães — typically reliable on the biggest nights — saw his penalty saved, handing PSG a 4-3 victory and sparking wild celebrations from the Paris contingent. For Arsenal, the miss felt particularly cruel: months of meticulous tactical preparation and iron-clad defending dissolved in a single, agonising moment.

Beyond the immediate heartbreak for Arsenal, PSG’s triumph carries broader significance. The victory validates a pronounced shift at the Parc des Princes: a deliberate move away from building solely around aging superstars toward a more balanced, cohesion-led model blending youth, athleticism and smart recruitment. Kvaratskhelia’s influence throughout the campaign symbolised that evolution — a player who can destabilise defences, create chances, and inject pace into key phases. PSG’s midfield and defensive reinforcements have allowed coach Luis Enrique to deploy a system that functions less as a collection of individual talents and more as an integrated unit capable of weathering pressure and delivering in decisive moments.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have much to take from the performance despite the loss. Their defensive organisation and ability to nullify elite attacking threats demonstrated growth under pressure. The Gunners will console themselves with a display that proved they belong on this stage; the task now is converting experience into the fine margins that decide finals. Recovering from this setback will depend on mental resilience and measured recruitment to close gaps exposed by PSG’s tactical flexibility.

For PSG, back-to-back titles do not simply reflect a win in one final — they mark the successful implementation of a long-term project. The penalty shootout outcome was a narrow one, but it underscored a club culture that has expanded beyond marquee names to embrace a collective identity capable of delivering Europe’s highest prize twice in a row.

Arsenal leave Budapest with questions about fate and fortune, while PSG return to Paris with the trophy and a clear message: the club’s future is being built on cohesion, calculated youth investment, and the ability to perform under unbearable pressure — a blueprint that just won them Europe, again.

It has come to light that the Paris Saint-Germain coach, Christophe Galtier has been summoned to stand trial in December as part of an investigation into racism allegations at his former club Nice, a prosecutor said on Friday.

Sir Dave Brailsford was expected to be interviewed as a witness by French police investigating allegations that the Paris Saint-Germain head coach, Christophe Galtier, made racist comments while manager of Nice.

A leaked email apparently sent to Brailsford in May 2022 by Julien Fournier, Nice’s then-director of football, was published last week and purported to show that Galtier had complained to Fournier in August 2021 that he “could not have so many blacks and Muslims in the team”.

Christophe Galtier to face trial in December

Christophe Galtier and his son, John Valovic-Galtier, were placed in custody for questioning on Friday morning. After his son was released without charge, Galtier was referred to the public prosecutor’s office. He will stand trial in Nice on 15 December on charges of psychological harassment and discrimination, the prosecutor Xavier Bonhomme posted on Twitter.

If found guilty, Christophe Galtier risks a maximum sentence of three years in jail and a fine of €45,000 euros (£38,700). The 56-year-old has denied accusations that he made racist and anti-Muslim comments while in charge of Nice when the scandal broke earlier this year.

Bonhomme said at the time a preliminary investigation had been opened into “discrimination on the grounds of alleged race or religion”. He said it was being handled by Nice police with searches of the club’s headquarters.

The 56-year-old Galtier led PSG to another French league title as expected, but the team were eliminated early in the Champions League and from the French Cup by Marseille. The team’s form slumped after the World Cup, with 10 losses in 28 games in 2023, and fans turned on stars such as Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Galtier has a year left on his contract in Paris. However, the club has reportedly been holding talks with the former Spain and Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique, to replace him in the coming days.

Messi had won the last edition of the Ballon d’Or in 2019 before last year’s awards were canceled due to the pandemic. He also won in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and in 2015. The 34-year-old scored 38 goals in 48 games last season for Barcelona and won the Copa del Rey before leading Argentina to Copa America glory in July. That marked the first major international title of his legendary career, which had been spent entirely with Barcelona before his heartbreaking departure from the Camp Nou in August and subsequent move to Ligue 1 giants, Paris Saint-Germain.

Lionel Messi has played just 11 games in the PSG outfit so far and he has netted four goals.
The incident occurred in the late stages of the contest with Neymar appearing to evade a tackle by an incoming player. However, he twisted his ankle horribly and went down to the ground immediately, screaming in agony.

His teammates soon crowded him and their reaction suggested that the injury was a serious one. He later gave an update with a post on Instagram and vowed to come back as a better player.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CW0rbX9lmZK/

“Unfortunately, these setbacks are a part of an athlete’s life. Now you have to raise your head and move on. I will come back better and stronger.”

PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino did not have an update following the culmination of the match where Messi stole the show with a hattrick of assists. He said:

“For the moment there is nothing to say. He felt pain from the twist of his ankle. Tomorrow, he will take exams and we will know a little more about his injury.”

Neymar and PSG extend their lead in Ligue 1

With a resounding 3-1 win over St. Etienne, PSG are now 12 points ahead in the league table. Following 14 games, the Ligue 1 giants have only dropped 4 points so far.

Despite their dominance in the league, the club are currently docile at best when it comes to Europe. They secured a second-place finish with a game to go. Draws to RB Leipzig and Club Brugged followed by a tame defeat to Manchester City hampered their chances of finishing atop their group.

The club now faces a difficult prospect with the possibility of being drawn against a top club in the Round Of 16. The rumours surrounding the future of Mauricio Pochettino also do not help their case, but all the signs point towards a stay till the end of the season with Manchester United closing on Ralf Rangnick as their interim manager.

Expectations are high from Messi and co. under Pochettino

Messi reunites with his former teammate Neymar and is set to compete for all the trophies under Mauricio Pochettino in Paris. The Ligue 1 giants already roped in several key players like Achraf Hakimi, Giorgino Wijnaldum, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Sergio Ramos.

The legendary player expressed his pleasure in having joined the team and claimed that PSG matched his ambitions. Messi is currently eyeing a record seventh Ballon d’Or coming off the back of a stellar season on a personal level which culminated with a maiden Copa America triumph. He also aims to add another Champions League title under his belt having won his last one in 2015 alongside Neymar.

Stephen Curry, on the other side, gears up for the upcoming NBA season. The Warriors have missed out on the playoffs for the last two years. While they finished at the bottom of the Western Conference table last year, this time around they came close to making it to the postseason. Having made it into the play-in tournament, defeats to Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies sealed their exit.

They will welcome back Klay Thompson into the outfit once again having missed two seasons in a row. The franchise are also looking into finalizing some trade deals as well.

Barcelona could not extend Messi’s contract due to La Liga’s salary cap rules. Following an emotional farewell, Messi is on his way to join the Ligue 1 giants. The Copa America winner is expected to earn around £25m per year after tax, plus bonuses. He will sign a two-year deal with the club and has an option to extend it for one more year.

Messi was seen at the Barcelona airport earlier today and he is expected o reach Paris later today for a medical, following which the deal will be announced formally.

The legendary player had expressed his desire to leave Barcelona last summer under Josep Bartemou’s reign as president. However, he changed his mind when Joan Laporta was re-elected as the president of the club.

Messi agreed to take a 50 percent pay cut to stay with the club and facilitate other signings as well. However, the deal was not approved by La Liga, which forced Barcelona to cut Lionel Messi off the squad altogether.

He was asked about the next step of his career in his farewell press conference, to which he had said that nothing is concrete despite talks going on with clubs.

This year, my family and I were convinced we were going to stay at home, that’s what we all wanted more than anything,” said Messi.

“We’d always made this our own, we were at home. We thought we would be staying here in Barcelona. But today, we have to say goodbye to all of this.” he said during the press conference.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain were two front runners for the player’s signature last time around. The Premier League champions bowed out of the race having captured Jack Grealish and are aiming to sign Harry Kane next.

PSG, however, having signed Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Giorgino Wijnaldum, and Achraf Hakimi already, went for the signing of Messi upon their interest and insistence from Neymar as well.

One of the greatest centre-backs to grace the game will ply his trade in France after signing for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain. Sergio Ramos had announced his departure from Real Madrid after the two parties failed to agree on a deal.

The former Real Madrid captain is the latest of the club’s signings which also include Achraf Hakimi, Giorgino Wijnaldum, with Gianluigi Donnarumma also on the horizon.

Ramos represented the Los Blancos for a total of sixteen seasons, which marked one of the greatest eras that the club ever witnessed. He opted to leave at the end of his current deal, as the La Liga side were only open to extending his stay for a solitary year while he demanded a two-year contract.

Ramos unfurls possibly the final chapter of his career

The 35-year-old expressed his pleasure after having completed his signing to the French capital and looked forward to contributing to an ambitious project set in place, which is illuminated by their rampant pursuit in the transfer market.

𝐒𝐢 𝐒𝐞𝐧̃𝐨𝐫! ✍️

🔴🔵 #WelcomeSergio
pic.twitter.com/n6vciD7YxU
— Paris Saint-Germain (@PSG_English) July 8, 2021

“I am very happy to join Paris Saint-Germain,” Ramos said. “This is a big change in my life, a new challenge and it’s a day I will never forget.

“I am very proud to be a part of this ambitious project, to be a part of this squad with so many great players. Paris Saint-Germain is a club that has already proven itself at the highest level. I want to continue to grow and improve at Paris and help the team to win as many trophies as possible.”

While Ramos has only made a solitary appearance since March to due to persistent injury troubles, he is expected to be available straightway for PSG, as they continue their pursuit for the elusive Champions League.

The addition of the experienced campaigner is invaluable to PSG due to his expertise as well as the winning mentality he brings to the table, an attribute that the club have lacked in their European campaigns.

Moreover, he can take young defenders in PSG under his wing and hone their skills and also expand the depth of the PSG backline which only had Presnel Kimpembe and Marquinhos as first-team material.

PSG are reportedly also eyeing an upgrade to their midfield department despite the addition of Wijnaldum. Eduardo Camavinga and Paul Pogba are the candidates eyed by PSG for a potential transfer move.

Sergio Ramos, who was part of the Los Blancos for 16 seasons, announced his departure from the club last week. The two parties apparently could not reach an agreement over the length of the contract, which led to his exit.

Sources in France claim that Ramos’ brother and agent Rene Ramos was in Paris on Thursday morning to finalize the deal.

All that is left in the deal is the medical, which will be scheduled soon. Following successful completion of the medicals, the 35-year-old will be unveiled by the club and will partner alongside Presnel Kimpembe and Marquinhos at the heart of the defence.

The reports suggest that the veteran has been offered a one-year contract with the option to extend it for another 12 months. Moreover, he is expected to take a pay cut as well.

Ramos was apparently presented an ambitious process by PSG’s sporting director Leonardo.

PSG mean business during the off season

The 2029-21 season was a bleak one for the Ligue 1 giants as they failed to capture the league title and also bowed out of the Champions League stage in the semi-finals.

While PSG are expected to make a statement to reclaim the league, their focus as always will be for their maiden Champions League title. The side have come close in the recent past and even made it to the finals last year, only to be defeated by Bayern Munich.

After Thomas Tuchel was sacked in December, the club appointed Mauricio Pochettino, and they are on the lookout to improve their squad across all the departments.

They have already sealed deals with the Milan duo Gianluigi Donnarumma and Achraf Hakimi. Moreover, PSG were able to hijack a transfer and rope in Giorgino Wijnaldum into the club as well. After securing Neymar’s contract as well, the only major question that remains is the future of Kylian Mbappe.

Paris Saint Germain stalwart Neymar Jr has been ruled out from the showdown against FC Barcelona tomorrow in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 at Parc des Princes.

After sustaining an adductor injury during PSG’s 1-0 win over Caen in the French Cup back in February, Neymar has been out of action, which includes missing the first leg against his former side.

Neymar returned to training but is not match ready yet

While the Brazilian has resumed training with the rest of the squad from the last week, the club deems Neymar still unfit to return to field duties as they revealed the same in an official statement, saying that the forward will still resume his personal recovery from the injury.

“Neymar JR resumed partial training with the squad last week and will continue his individual recovery work. A new assessment will be made in the coming days,” the club’s statement read.

Alongside Neymar’s injury update, PSG also revealed that Moise Kean, who scored against Barcelona in the first leg remains in isolation after the Italian forward tested positive for COVID-19 last week.

ALSO READ: COVID-19 and cardiac issues, a correlation super rare in pro athletes

Moreover, Juan Bernat is also unavailable due to a knee injury, while their reserve goalkeeper Sergio Rico has not taken part in training as the club cites reasons that are personal.

After Neymar limped off from the field against Caen back in mid February, PSG estimated that the superstar would be out for four weeks and was expected to miss both legs against the Catalans originally.

However, it wasn’t the first time that Neymar had hurt his adductor this season. Back in October last year, the forward was injured in the same manner in PSG’s 2-0 win over İstanbul Başakşehir and was subbed off from the field by the 26th minute.

Neymar was unable to continue after injuring his adductor against Başakşehir last October. (Image Courtesy: Getty)

So far in this season Neymar has made only 18 appearances for the French heavyweights but has clocked an impressive 13 goals and 16 assists across all competitions.

Although PSG will miss their stalwart striker once against as they host the La Liga elites, they have a huge 4-1 aggregate advantage thanks to a super first leg performance.

Kylian Mbappe, who mesmerized with a hattrick against Barca, will be back in full force to lead the PSG attack, as they aim a stout entry into the quarter-finals.

Most footballing encounters become a kind of fuzzy backdrop in our minds once the 90 minutes of action is over. But rarely, very rarely comes a match which shuns our beliefs about the limits of football. The ones which make our minds stunned. The likes of which ruin the careers of even great and make the rookies heroes for eons to come. This is the story of one such game.

But what followed in the 2nd leg was just surreal and remains one of the most iconic Man U moments in the post-Ferguson era.

And now the hero of that night, Marcus Rashford has come forward to share the man on whose shoulders that epic win was scripted.

Selfless, a team player-

Manchester United have been drawn with PSG in group H, which with the presence of RB Leipzig has turned into a group of death of sorts.

Following the draws, Marcus Rashford came forward to tweet a story about that epic night.

Let me tell you a little story about @RomeluLukaku9,” Rashford began.

“We are playing PSG in the second leg of the Champions League, with little hope of qualifying. 2-0 down on agg. 2 mins in, Rom scores. 30 mins in, Rom scores. We need one more goal to qualify. 94th min – penalty…

Rom steps up picks up the ball and hands it to me. He knew this was my moment. He knew it would be me that got all news coverage for scoring that penalty and he was ok with that, ignoring the fact that he was the most instrumental part of that win.

“That tells you all you need to know about @RomeluLukaku9. Selfless, a team player… Never afraid to dim his light for others to shine. That’s my brother and I appreciate him.”

The entire thread brings to the light the little moments, the seemingly small sacrifices that change the course of a fixture, the course of history itself.

Rashford vs PSG, CR7 vs Lionel Messi-

The coming Champions League season for sure promises to be the one to remember for the ages and not in the least because Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are once again set to lock horns after a 2-year hiatus.

The fact that both the legends are now at the fag end of their career only suggests that these moments will be few and far means that the game would surely be one to cherish for ages to come.

On the other hand, Rashford would get to relive his 2018/19 season when Manchester United take on PSG, in a potential group of death.
