This match ends Djokovic’s bid for a record-extending 11th title and a 25th major to put him clear of Margaret Court. Djokovic’s elimination means there will be a new name on the Australian Open men’s singles trophy. Carlos Alcaraz relinquished his top spot after the defeat; Djokovic likely to remain at top

Djokovic is currently the favorite to win a record-extending 11th title in Melbourne. The Serb had a tough start to his campaign but he played with conviction. The 36-year-old’s quarterfinal victory over Taylor Fritz, in particular, dispelled any doubts about him being out of his element Down Under. He will take on his rival Jannik Sinner in a huge semifinal clash at the Australian Open on Friday, January 26. In the past, they have locked horns six times on the ATP Tour so far, with the Serb having 4-2 advantage.

Alcaraz, on the other hand, had a decent start to the Australian Open, dropping just one set on his way to the final eight. But on Wednesday, the 20-year-old was unprepared for the brilliant display of sixth-seeded Alexander Zverev, falling to the German in four arduous sets.

Carlos Alcaraz’s defeat prevented him from finishing the two weeks as the top-ranked ATP player. Having 8,855 ranking points at the moment, the Spaniard has the potential to surpass Novak Djokovic as the world’s top player if he wins the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup.

Alcaraz had no points to defend in Melbourne, as he missed last year’s campaign due to a right leg injury. Novak Djokovic also dropped 2,000 of his 11,055 ATP ranking points as the defending champion before this week, but that isn’t a concern for him.

Djokovic is likely to top the rankings till February 19 and it will bring his weeks at No. 1 tally to 412 weeks. The 20-year-old Spaniard, meanwhile, is defending ATP points in the post-Australian Open swing. This indicates that he is unlikely to secure the top spot from the 24-time Major winner anytime soon.

After Alcaraz’s win, he was questioned by the former world number  No. 1 Jim Courier during Alcaraz’s on-court interview. Alcaraz was asked to name some of his favorite players, he went on to name some of the legends of the game like Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, and others.

“Well, I’m a huge fan of tennis. I love to watch every match if I can but I love watching Daniil [Medvedev] for example, Novak [Djokovic], [Jannik] Sinner as well. I mean those guys, I like to watch, every time they step on the court, they put [their] best level. As a huge tennis fan, I like to watch pretty good tennis, high level, so those players or the best players in the world, I like to watch,” the 20-year-old replied.

Courier then went on to Ask the Spaniard about his favorite player in the WTA or the Women’s Tennis Association and Alcarazs’ reply produced a roar of laughter in the stadium.

“Well, I, I watch WTA as well,” he said, followed by laughter from the crowd at Rod Laver Arena. “No, I mean, when I can obviously, I mean when I turn the TV on, if it’s WTA, ATP, whatever, I like to watch,” Alcaraz added after failing to come up with a name.

Carlos Alcaraz will face the world no.6 Germany’s Alexander Zverev in his quarterfinal debut at the Australian Open on  January 24. Alcaraz will be eyeing to progress in the tournament and take the trophy home but for that, he has to win three more games. Alcaraz can’t take Zverev lightly as he has a lead over Alcaraz on head-to-head and he will be looking to increase that lead on 24th January.

With two sets in his bag, the third set was tied at 6-6. An ace progressed him into the next round, as the heckler’s words seemed to have no impact on Djokovic.

Djokovic praised his opponent and reflected on his solid performance following his victory as he said “Obviously never easy to play Adrian, who is a very unorthodox player, uses the angles really well and has got one of the flattest and most consistent backhands in the game. It’s kind of a cat and mouse, really, tennis match against him. So I had to in a way physically endure the long rallies and try to run him around the court, which I did and I think I served very well. In the moments when I needed to come up with the first serve I did, so all in all a great performance.”

Rivals Hoping To Deny Djokovic Sweep

While Djokovic was basking in the glory of another incredible season, 2023 was a year to forget for his old rival Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard suffered a hip injury at the Australian Open and was sidelined for the remainder of the year, despite hopes he would return ahead of each Grand Slam on the calendar. The good news for Nadal fans is that the 37-year-old is fit and ready to go for the 2024 Australian Open. Whether the veteran can hit the ground running and challenge for a third Aussie Open title of his career remains to be seen, but the ‘King of Clay’ should be a contender to land one more French Open crown before calling time on his career.

Meanwhile, Medvedev will be hoping 2024 is the year he finally adds a second Grand Slam to his tally after winning the US Open in 2021. Reaching the final of the Australian Open twice and the semi-finals at Wimbledon, Medvedev has come close to adding to his solitary major title and the 27-year-old should be in the mix again this coming season.
