Nobody had a better time watching the NHL playoffs this week than Carolina Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette.

The Panthers’ second-year wideout was in attendance for Wednesday’s Eastern Conference Finals Game 5 between the Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, N.C. The Carolina native was mic’d up for the occasion, which was a huge delight for football and hockey fans alike.

Legette, a first-time watcher of live hockey, delivered commentary from his rinkside seat with a thick southern accent. He reacted to every flying puck and hip check with the most youthful enthusiasm.

It was the United States’ first win against Canada in a best-on-best international tournament since the preliminary round of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics on Feb. 21, 2010.

Larkin had a goal and an assist, and Connor Hellebuyck made 25 saves for the U.S., which leads the tournament standings with six points (2-0-0-0) because of two regulation wins, including 6-1 against Finland on Thursday.

Canada (0-1-0-1), Sweden and Finland each has two points. A regulation win is worth three points, so the United States can’t be caught for first place when the remaining two games of the round-robin portion are played at TD Garden in Boston on Monday.

The championship game is at TD Garden on Thursday.

“It’s exciting to guarantee to be in Thursday, but we still have a big one Monday (against Sweden),” U.S. forward Brady Tkachuk said. “I guess it can be easy to get complacent, but this group I don’t even think it’s going to get in our mind that we’re happy with where we’re at. I think we know what’s at stake here. We know what our goal has been right from the start, and I don’t think we’re going to stop until we get it.”

Connor McDavid scored, and Jordan Binnington made 20 saves for Canada.

Canada will clinch a berth in the final with a regulation win against Finland on Monday (1 p.m. ET; MAX, truTV, TNT, SN, TVAS). Finland will do the same if it defeats Canada in regulation.

“It was fast, tight-checking, competitive, emotional,” McDavid said. “It had everything you would want in a hockey game. It [stinks] it didn’t go our way, but this thing’s far from over.”

The intensity and emotion of the rivalry were evident from the opening face-off as there were three fights in the first nine seconds.

“Mayhem,” Canada coach Jon Cooper said. “That was the first minute.”

U.S. forward Matthew Tkachuk fought Canada forward Brandon Hagel right after the puck drop, with two seconds having come off the clock. On the ensuing face-off, U.S. forward Brady Tkachuk did the same with Canada forward Sam Bennett after one more second ticked off.

After another face-off and six seconds of play, J.T. Miller of the United States and Colton Parayko of Canada fought after a scrum by the U.S. net.

Miller was also called for cross-checking, but the U.S. killed the penalty.

“I think the message we wanted to send is ‘It’s our time,'” Matthew Tkachuk said. “We’re in a hostile environment, and we wanted to show that we’re not backing down. They’ve had so much success over so many years over there. They’re some of the best players in the world. We felt in this environment it was a good time to do it. It was a lot of fun.

“You’ve got to give credit to those guys, as well. They did the exact same thing that we did. I thought it was great energy from both sides, and the building was shaking after the third one. I’m excited to watch them.”

Things settled down after that, the pace picked up and McDavid gave Canada a 1-0 lead at 5:31 of the first period.

He gained speed through the neutral zone, got the puck from Drew Doughty in stride and with space, and protected it from Charlie McAvoy on his backhand before lifting a backhand over Hellebuyck’s glove from the right side.

Canada had the puck a lot in the third period but couldn’t get through offensively with the U.S. playing well in its structure, getting sticks on pucks, disrupting passing lanes and blocking eight shots.

“We had the puck for about 180 feet, we couldn’t get it past that extra 20 feet and that’s stuff we’ve got to look at,” Cooper said. “We’ve got to learn from this.”

Hellebuyck said it “felt playoff hockey” in the third period.

“Got a lead and you try to kill the clock,” he said. “Try to garner a little bit of something, but you know the team is going to be pressing so you’ve got to play perfect hockey, perfect details.”

Guentzel scored into an empty net at 18:41 for the 3-1 final.

Hellebuyck made three more saves after that to finish with eight in the third.

“What an incredible hockey game,” U.S. coach Mike Sullivan said.

The Dallas Stars faced a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers in Game 6 of the Western Conference Final. The defeat left the Stars feeling utterly devastated, and their coach, Pete DeBoer, summed it up succinctly-

“Gutted is the only word I can feel when you lose a game like that,” Pete DeBoer said, per Sportsnet. “Proud of our group, proud of our fight, proud of our battle…They did leave everything out there. We should be going to play a Game 7, {but} we’re not.”

The Stars had fought hard throughout the playoffs, but this loss was particularly painful. As the Oilers celebrated their victory, the Stars were left grappling with the disappointment of falling just short of their ultimate goal: winning the Stanley Cup.

Joe Pavelski, The 39-year-old forward, who has played over 1,300 regular-season games in his NHL career, gave everything he had in what might have been his last game.
“I don’t know if it’ll be Joe’s last game or not,” said DeBoer, who coached Pavelski with the San Jose Sharks from 2015-19 and the Stars the past two seasons. “But [it was the] absolute privilege of my coaching career to coach a guy like that.”

Forward Jakob Silfverberg’s retirement announcement signifies the end of an era for the Ducks and a chapter closed on a successful NHL career.

A Storied Tenure: Jakob Silfverberg’s Legacy with the Ducks

Jakob Silfverberg arrived in Anaheim in 2013 after being drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 2009. He quickly carved out a niche for himself with the Ducks, establishing himself as a dependable two-way forward known for his strong work ethic, physical play, and clutch scoring ability.

While Silfverberg’s career totals of 165 goals and 322 points in 791 games are respectable, his impact on the Ducks goes beyond mere statistics. He was a valuable locker room presence, a leader on the ice, and a fan favorite known for his dedication to the team and the city of Anaheim.

Silfverberg played a key role in the Anaheim Ducks’ 2017 Stanley Cup championship run. His versatility and defensive prowess made him a valuable asset throughout the playoffs. While he might not have been the flashiest player, his contributions were vital to the team’s success.

Silfverberg’s legacy extends beyond the ice. He has been a dedicated philanthropist throughout his career, actively supporting various charitable causes in the Anaheim area. His commitment to giving back to the community solidified his place as a respected figure within the Ducks organization.

Silfverberg’s retirement signifies a changing of the guard for the Anaheim Ducks. The team is in the midst of a rebuild, and his departure opens up an opportunity for younger players to step up and fill the void he leaves behind.

This move signifies a significant shift for the Chiefs, who have prioritized stability at the quarterback position since drafting Patrick Mahomes in 2017.

The Carson Wentz Saga

Carson Wentz’s career trajectory has been anything but predictable. Drafted as the No. 2 overall pick by the Eagles in 2016, he initially thrived, earning a Pro Bowl nod during his tenure in Philly. However, the 2020 season marked a turning point. Amidst turmoil and inconsistency, Wentz’s days with the Eagles came to an end. Subsequent stints with the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Commanders yielded mixed results, leaving him searching for stability.

Last year, Carson Wentz donned the Los Angeles Rams jersey as a late-season addition. In a Week 18 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, he showcased his skills, tallying three touchdowns in a victory. But now, he faces a different challenge—one that could define the next chapter of his career.

The reigning Super Bowl champions have secured Wentz’s services on a one-year deal. While he won’t be competing for the starting role, his experience and versatility make him a valuable asset. At 31 years old, Wentz brings a wealth of knowledge from his eight NFL seasons. His 47-45-1 record as a starter and impressive passing stats—22,292 yards, 153 touchdowns, and 67 interceptions—underscore his potential impact.

Patrick Mahomes needs no introduction. The Chiefs’ superstar quarterback has redefined the position, dazzling fans with his arm talent and creativity. However, injuries have made the team cautious about using him for short-yardage sneaks. Enter Wentz—a 6-foot-5, 237-pounder with underrated mobility. If needed, he could step in as a ground gainer, alleviating the risk to Mahomes.

Landon Slaggert, a young rookie making his NHL debut with the Chicago Blackhawks, such a collision occurred during a recent game against the Calgary Flames. Slaggert’s journey from college hockey to the big leagues has been nothing short of remarkable, and his performance on the ice left fans both exhilarated and empathetic.

Landon Slaggert’s first brush with glory came in the second period. Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom mishandled the puck, leaving the net wide open. Slaggert seized the opportunity, firing toward the empty goal. But fate intervened—the shot was blocked by defenseman MacKenzie Weegar. The net loomed large, yet Slaggert’s aim fell just short. The collective gasp from the crowd echoed his frustration.

Undeterred, Landon Slaggert pressed on. In the third period, he launched another shot, this time off a breakaway. The puck sailed toward the crossbar, tantalizingly close to the elusive goal. The horn blared, the official signalled a good goal, and the United Center erupted in cheers. But upon video review, the truth emerged—the puck had hit the post and never crossed the line. Slaggert’s celebration turned to disbelief.

Family’s Reaction

Landon Slaggert’s family, seated in the stands, mirrored the rollercoaster of emotions. His little brother and parents had made the short drive to witness this pivotal moment. Their faces shifted from elation to disappointment as the overturned goal sank in. It was a near-miss that would haunt Slaggert, replaying in his mind as he lay down to sleep that night.

Landon Slaggert’s journey to the NHL had been a whirlwind. Fresh from wrapping up his senior season at Notre Dame, he signed an entry-level contract with the Blackhawks. The transition from college hockey to the pros was swift, and Slaggert found himself skating alongside seasoned players like Jason Dickinson and Joey Anderson.

The Viral Tweet

As the game unfolded, Twitter user Charlie Roumeliotis captured the essence of Landon Slaggert’s near-miss. The tweet resonated with fans, sparking conversations about the fine line between victory and defeat in the NHL.

In a thrilling clash on Tuesday night, the Colorado Avalanche secured a 4-3 victory against the St. Louis Blues, fueled by an impressive performance from Mikko Rantanen. The Finnish forward notched his seventh career hat trick, leaving fans in awe of his scoring prowess

Colorado coach Jared Bednar said.

“Tonight’s game wasn’t perfect. I thought we had some trouble managing the puck. We’ve been going through games without turnovers, and tonight we had more than a handful. You’ve got to give them credit. They checked hard. We didn’t manage the puck the way we’d like to. Guys played hard and stayed with it. We found a way to get the lead back. All in all, a great (four-game) road trip. Got to be happy with it.”

The Heroics of Mikko Rantanen

Mikko Rantanen’s three goals came at crucial junctures, with one in each period. His relentless offensive play showcased his skill and determination.

The first goal arrived at 6:36 of the first period, as he fired a wrist shot from the slot, capitalizing on a centering pass from Nathan MacKinnon.

In the second period, Rantanen tied the game at 3-3 with a power-play redirection, courtesy of a pinpoint pass from Jonathan Drouin.

The hat trick was complete in the third period at 4:15, as Rantanen unleashed a blistering one-timer from the slot after Valeri Nichushkin forced a turnover in the offensive zone.

MacKinnon extended his point streak to an impressive 16 games with an assist, further solidifying his impact on the Avalanche’s success.

Nichushkin and Drouin each contributed two assists, emphasizing the team’s depth and playmaking abilities.

The Avalanche have been on a tear, outscoring opponents 31-13 during their seven-game winning streak.

Despite the loss, the Blues fought hard. Nathan Walker managed a goal and an assist, but their four-game winning streak came to an end.

Goaltender Jordan Binnington made 31 saves, but it wasn’t enough to halt Rantanen’s scoring spree.

As the NHL season continues, Mikko Rantanen’s heroics serve as a reminder of the magic that unfolds on the ice. The Avalanche march forward, fueled by their star forward’s brilliance, while the Blues regroup and prepare for their next battle.

In a thrilling matchup on Monday, the Washington Capitals secured their third consecutive victory by defeating the Calgary Flames with a final score of 5-2. The game took place at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, and it was a night to remember for Capitals fans.

Alex Ovechkin’s Historic Achievement

Alex Ovechkin, the legendary Capitals forward, etched his name in NHL history once again. He became only the third player ever to score 20 goals in 19 consecutive seasons. His remarkable feat places him alongside hockey greats like Gordie Howe and Ron Francis. But Ovechkin didn’t stop there—he achieved this milestone while playing for the same team throughout his illustrious career.

Here’s a breakdown of the key moments from the game.

Dylan Strome opened the scoring for the Capitals with a wrist shot, giving them a 1-0 lead. Alex Ovechkin took center stage, scoring two power-play goals. His redirection off Max Pacioretty’s pass and a one-timer from the right circle put the Capitals ahead 3-0. Kevin Rooney tipped in Brayden Pachal’s backhander, narrowing the gap to 3-1.

Hendrix Lapierre capitalized on a long backhand pass from Sonny Milano, making it 4-1. MacKenzie Weegar’s slap shot and Tom Wilson’s empty-net goal sealed the deal, securing the 5-2 victory for Washington.

“It’s a great feeling,” Ovechkin said. “We know it’s not going to be easy. We keep fighting, keep playing. We’ll go game by game.”

With this win, the Capitals moved into the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, positioning themselves for a playoff berth. Their consistent performance, led by Alex Ovechkin’s scoring prowess, bodes well for their postseason aspirations.

Goaltender Charlie Lindgren played a crucial role in the victory, making 34 saves to deny the Flames’ offensive efforts. His stellar performance ensured that the Capitals left Calgary with a well-deserved win.

As the regular season winds down, the Capitals will look to build on this momentum and secure their playoff spot. For Ovechkin, the pursuit of greatness continues—one goal at a time.

The National Hockey League (NHL) is a league rich with friendship and history. Achieving the prestigious 1,000-game-played mark is a noteworthy accomplishment for any athlete. The road is difficult, the strain is tremendous, and the commitment is steadfast. It’s proof of ability, tenacity, and teammates’ steadfast support throughout a player’s career.

The tweet included a video showcasing a team surrounding a player in a celebratory embrace. The message is clear: reaching 1,000 games is a team accomplishment. It captures the essence of T.J. Oshie’s journey. His fellow players, who have witnessed his growth and contributions, express their admiration. The love and respect they extend to him transcend the game itself. It’s a testament to the bonds forged in the locker room and on the rink.

Only a few people will ever have played 1,000 NHL games. Years of intense preparation, innumerable games, and the capacity to endure the demanding physical demands of the sport are all represented by it. Players struggle with injuries, compete night after night at the maximum degree of their physical preparedness, and bear the heavy burden of delivering their best work.

Although the player who reaches 1,000 games receives a lot of attention, the journey would not be possible without the steadfast support of teammates. With their support both on and off the rink, these teammates grow to be a player’s second family. They encourage one another to improve, share in each other’s successes, and lament defeats.
