Paris Saint-Germain, the Ligue 1 champions were captained by their veteran defender Thiago Silva for eight years, since the former AC Milan star landed at the French capital back in 2012.

Now with Silva’s departure to Chelsea on a free transfer, the Parisians have announced vice-captain Marquinhos to lead the squad.

He’s very versatile now: PSG boss Tuchel hails new captain Marquinhos

A youth product of Corinthians, Marquinhos arrived at PSG in 2013 from AS Roma, and has made 179 appearances for the club till date, and scored 14 times. Primarily a centre back, the Samba international can also be deployed as a right-back or even in central or defensive midfield roles.

“It makes sense that he takes the armband this season. Marquinhos in the midfield offers many solutions, he is able to help central defenders, and to be decisive in front,” Tuchel was quoted on PSG’s official website.

“Given the situation, we’re going to need him in central defense, but he can do both, he’s very versatile now. It’s a good thing for us, he’s coming back to training and we’re very happy about that,” the German gaffer added.

Marquinhos’s wish of wearing the PSG armband fulfils

Back in August, when talks were going on about former skipper Silva’s potential departure, Marquinhos expressed his desire to become the next captain of the club.

“It would be an honor. But our captain is still Thiago Silva. I’m vice-captain and I try to help out as much as possible,” the 26-year-old spoke to Brazilian news outlet Globo Esporte last month.
