After a busy extended summer transfer window, clubs had one last day to finish off their signings before time shuts the door. As it is with deadline day, the summer transfer window’s finale matched the expectation with stunning late minute deals and unexpected moves. Despite the setback caused by the pandemic, teams were not shy to lay out the cash, with Premier League alone spending over a billion dollars in the window.

Given the unpredictable nature of football so far this season and the intensity of the competition they have to contest in, major clubs were on the look to revamp their squad before time ran out. Let us have a look at some of the major acquisitions the clubs managed to secure on deadline day.

Thomas Partey (Atletico Madrid to Arsenal; £50million)

After being linked to a slew of midfielders during the course of the transfer window, Arsenal finally decided to go all-in for Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey. While the La Liga club did not expect any suitors to pay the release clause on deadline day, the Gunners swooped in for a late, late move for the physical midfielder.

The move would see Lucas Torreira move the other way on loan. Arsenal were getting thin in the midfield department after opting to send Mateo Guendouzi on loan to Hertha Berlin.

Alex Telles (FC Porto to Manchester United; £15.4 million)

After weeks of inactivity in the transfer window following a quick move for Donny van de Beek, Manchester United endured a busy outing on deadline day to strengthen the squad which has been looking lost as of late.

The club finally secured the signing of left-back Alex Telles from FC Porto after having their first bid rejected initially. The player signed a four-year contract with the club with an option to extend for a further year.

Chris Smalling (Manchester United to AS Roma; £18.1million)

After ten-long years with the Red Devils, centre back Chris Smalling departed for Serie A side Roma after the two clubs reached to an agreement for a transfer fee of £18.1million.

Smalling had spent the last season on loan with Roma after Manchester United signed Harry Maguire. The defender signed a three-year deal with his new club.

Federico Chiesa (Fiorentina to Juventus; €50 million)

The highly-rated 22-year-old joined Juventus on deadline day on a two-year loan deal with an obligation to buy for 50 million Euros.

Andrea Pirlo has already revamped the squad with the permanent departures of Blaise Matuidi, Sami Khedira and Gonzalo Higuain. Players like Daniele Rugani and Mattia De Sciglio have been shipped off to France for loan spells with Rennes and Lyon respectively.

Edinson Cavani (Manchester United; Free transfer)

The Uruguay striker signed a one-year contract with the option of extending a further year with Manchester United. After failing to strike a deal with Benfica, Atletico Madrid and Juventus, the accomplished striker was offered to the Premier League giants.

Cavani will join and compete with Anthony Martial and Odion Ighalo for a spot upfront. The striker will reportedly earn over 200k euros in weekly wages with the Red Devils already paying 10 million dollars as agent fees to secure the signing.

Apart from Telles and Cavani, Manchester United were able to make three more signings on deadline day in the form of young prospects. Amad Diallo Traore, Facundo Pellistri and Willy Kambwala were roped in.
