Russell Wilson’s free agency journey is over.
Wilson is signing with the New York Giants, according to multiple reports. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Wilson agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $21 million, with $10.5 million of it guaranteed.
No matter what the Giants accomplish in the draft, this should resolve their quarterback dilemma for 2025. For the majority of the offseason, they considered Wilson a potential possibility; however, the quarterback’s decision was mainly delayed by interest in Aaron Rodgers. The Giants presumably decided to move quickly and bring Wilson in because Wilson felt comfortable leaving Pittsburgh and Rodgers was likely to end up somewhere other than New York.
Wilson was reportedly still a possible possibility for the Giants, who had already signed Jameis Winston in free agency. At No. 3 in the NFL Draft, they could still target a quarterback and allow that selection to mature as a backup.
Wilson was also a target for the Cleveland Browns, but perhaps Wilson simply chose New York or Cleveland waited too long to make a move.
Wilson threw for 2,482 yards with 16 touchdowns and 5 interceptions in 11 games for Pittsburgh last season. He faded down the stretch, which hurt his value, but he is still a significant improvement for the Giants, who are coming off a 3-14 campaign. The 36-year-old is not a long-term solution, but if the Giants’ goal is to regain respectability in 2025, he should help.
