Only by a slim margin, Gervonta Davis is still the WBA lightweight champion.
“Tank” challenged Lamont Roach for the title on Saturday night at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. Despite being the overwhelming favorite, Davis almost lost the title after 12 grueling rounds, narrowly escaping with a majority decision draw.
Given how easily he could have lost the bout, Davis is fortunate to have even managed the draw. After being punched by Roach in the ninth round, Davis mysteriously went down on his knee. After that, he dashed to his corner, where his instructors used a towel to wipe his face.
In his post-fight interview, Davis later detailed the events that transpired.
“I just got my hair done two days ago, and she put grease in my shit,” Davis said. “The shit was like, you know when you’re sweating and things like that and the grease came in my face and it burnt my eyes.”
