Michael Jordan, the man who turned basketball into a billion-dollar empire, just flexed his financial muscle in the unlikeliest arena: NASCAR. Reports from Sports Business Journal reveal that when his 23XI Racing team eyed a top-tier driver signing, Jordan’s financial advisor flagged the eye-watering cost—a cool $10 million-plus guarantee for a single season. Jordan’s response? A booming laugh followed by, “That’s it? Sign him yesterday.” No hesitation, no sticker shock—just the Airness mindset that treats seven figures like pocket change.

This anecdote underscores Jordan’s unbreakable swagger 20 years into NASCAR ownership. Co-founded with Denny Hamlin in 2020, 23XI Racing exploded onto the scene, securing Bubba Wallace as its cornerstone talent. Wallace’s 2021 breakthrough win at Talladega—Jordan’s first as owner—ignited the team’s rise, now bolstered by Toyota backing and a $200 million-plus valuation. The unnamed driver in question? Insiders whisper it’s a Cup Series star like Tyler Reddick or even poaching from rivals, amid 23XI’s aggressive expansion. Jordan’s quip came during contract talks, where advisor Curt Long laid out the math: base pay, bonuses, endorsements. MJ’s retort silenced the room, greenlighting the deal on the spot.

Jordan’s nonchalance isn’t bravado—it’s backed by an empire. Net worth hovering at $3.5 billion (Forbes 2025), fueled by Nike’s Jordan Brand ($6.6 billion annual revenue) and past ventures like the Charlotte Hornets sale for $3 billion, he views NASCAR as playground money. Contrast that with his playing days: Jordan earned $94 million in salary, but his shoe empire minted billions. 23XI’s operating budget rivals Joe Gibbs Racing, with Wallace’s $8 million salary paling against the new target’s ask. “Michael doesn’t flinch at investments that win,” Hamlin told reporters post-Spanish GP. “He sees championships like rings.”

The story ripples through motorsport’s cutthroat economics. NASCAR driver contracts ballooned 40% since 2023’s TV deal, with top-10 talents commanding $12-15 million amid Saudi PIF interest and PPV streaming wars. Teams like Hendrick and Stewart-Haas scrape for sponsors; Jordan prints money. Critics call it unfair—small outfits can’t compete—but 23XI’s results silence them: two wins in 2024, Wallace’s playoffs, and Reddick’s top-5 average finish. This signing could vault them to title contention in 2026, especially with the Chicago street race and Mexico City expansion drawing Gen-Z fans.

Jordan’s laugh echoes his GOAT mentality. From trash-talking Reggie Miller to outmaneuvering Phil Jackson, he thrives on big swings. NASCAR, once dismissed as “redneck racing” by elites, now boasts $1.2 billion purses—Jordan’s domain. As Wallace eyes his first championship and Hamlin mentors from afar, this move signals 23XI’s endgame: dominance.

Wall Street Bets lit up; MJ memes flooded X. Will the mystery driver deliver? Jordan bets yes, because for him, the cost of greatness is always a bargain. In a sport of horsepower and heart, the 6-6 legend just raised the stakes—again.

Recently, Christopher Bell expressed his bewilderment over the tire issues faced during NASCAR practice at Iowa Speedway. Despite having tested on the same tire back in May, where Bell, along with Kyle Larson and Brad Keselowski, completed multiple 50-lap runs with no issues, the recent practice session told a different story.

According to Christopher Bell, what’s really bizarre about the tire issues in practice is they tested on this same tire in May and the three cars (Bell, Larson, Keselowski) did multiple 50-lap runs with no issues. Then today some of them can’t make it 20. Huh?? Makes no sense.

— Jeff Gluck (@jeff_gluck) June 14, 2024

Bell noted that some drivers couldn’t even make it 20 laps without encountering tire problems, a stark contrast to their previous experience. The temperature difference between the May test and the recent practice session was around 15 degrees, which could be a contributing factor to these issues.

“It’s strange,” said Bell, who along with Cindric will have to go to a backup car for Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s race. “It’s very, very strange.”

During a Goodyear tire test at the .875-mile oval on May 28, conditions were cooler by approximately 15 degrees compared to the practice day. “We were just here, what, a month ago?” Bell remarked. “And we did 50-lap runs, like all day long, and had no issues at all. I never had a tire problem at all,” he added, highlighting the discrepancy between the two events.

The practice session at Iowa Speedway turned into an unexpected test for tires and raised questions about the quality of the upcoming race. With several drivers facing tire issues and some even resorting to backup cars after the practice session, it’s clear that tire performance remains an unpredictable element in NASCAR racing.

NASCAR’s Challenge at Iowa Speedway

The recent practice session at Iowa Speedway was marked by unexpected tire issues that caught NASCAR drivers off guard. The event, which was supposed to be a routine practice, quickly turned into a critical examination of tire durability and performance.

The temperature on the day of practice was notably higher than during the May test, which could have affected the tire’s behavior. Bell expressed his confusion over the situation, stating, “We were just here, what, a month ago? And we did 50-lap runs, like all day long, and had no issues at all. I never had a tire problem at all.”

With several drivers encountering issues and some even switching to backup cars after practice, teams are now faced with the task of addressing these concerns before race day.

Behind his numerous victories and his 2017 championship title lies a partnership that has been his backbone for over two decades.

Truex’s relationship with Morris goes beyond the typical racer-sponsor dynamic. It’s a bond forged on mutual respect and shared passions. Both outdoorsmen at heart, they’ve leveraged NASCAR’s platform to champion conservation causes, making an impact that transcends the racetrack.

As Truex gears up for what could be his final full-time season in NASCAR, he reflects on the role Morris has played in his career. “It means the world to me to see Johnny Morris here,” Truex shared in a heartfelt statement. “He’s been a huge supporter of mine, and I wouldn’t have been able to do any of the things I’ve been able to without him being behind me for 21 years. It’s been incredible.”

As the checkered flag prepares to wave on Martin Truex Jr.’s full-time racing career, fans and the NASCAR community alike have been reflecting on the legacy he leaves behind. Yet, in a recent heartfelt interview, Truex Jr. offered a reassuring message to those wondering about his next chapter: “I won’t be gone.”

Denny Hamlin, co-owner of 23XI Racing and a seasoned NASCAR driver, has been involved in discussions about team strategies, especially when it comes to pivotal races like the one at Daytona. While there isn’t a direct quote about him offering a 23XI car to Martin Truex Jr. for Daytona, Hamlin has spoken about the dynamics within his team and his role as both an owner and a competitor.

In a recent episode of his podcast “Actions Detrimental,” Hamlin touched upon the possible scenarios involving his team at Daytona, highlighting his ownership of the car and his willingness to support his teammates, including Bubba Wallace. This indicates that Hamlin is deeply invested in the success of 23XI Racing and is prepared to make strategic decisions that benefit the team as a whole.

23XI Racing, formed by NBA legend Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, has been making waves in NASCAR since its inception. The team debuted in the 2021 Daytona 500 with Bubba Wallace as their driver, showcasing their No. 23 Toyota Camry supported by Toyota Racing Development. The collaboration and technical alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing have been crucial in establishing 23XI Racing as a competitive force on the track.

As a team owner, he has expressed pride in achieving goals such as getting both cars into the playoffs, reflecting his commitment to 23XI Racing’s success.

Truex’s career has been nothing short of remarkable. His expertise and experience will be invaluable to JGR as they continue to cultivate new talent and compete at the highest levels of NASCAR.

In addition to his ambassadorial duties, Truex plans to participate in select NASCAR races with 23XI Racing. This team, co-owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan and fellow driver Denny Hamlin, has been making waves in the racing community since its inception. Truex’s involvement with 23XI Racing is a testament to his passion for the sport and his desire to remain competitive, even as he takes on a less intensive racing schedule.

As Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) approaches its final months of operation, Kevin Harvick, a prominent figure in NASCAR and former SHR driver, has voiced his concerns over the challenges faced by the team in retaining its employees. With the closure of SHR set for post-2024 season, maintaining morale and ensuring transparent communication have become pivotal for the team’s management.

It is going to get harder and harder for Stewart-Haas Racing to keep employees during the team's final months.@KevinHarvick talks about how that will affect their remaining races.@MambaSmith34 | @KaitlynVincie | #NASCAR pic.twitter.com/Hn0oI17kLj

Harvick has highlighted the importance of retaining crucial staff during these final months. The team’s success over the years has been largely attributed to its dedicated personnel, and as such, their role cannot be overstated. However, with the impending closure, there is a risk of losing these valuable team members to other organizations within NASCAR.

The management practices within SHR have come under scrutiny, with Harvick emphasizing the need for more involved leadership to navigate through this transitional period. The team’s ability to keep its employees engaged and committed until the end will be a testament to its leadership’s effectiveness.

Kevin Harvick’s Reaction After Stewart-Haas Racing Exit: A Reflection on Legacy and Change

The recent announcement of Stewart-Haas Racing’s (SHR) exit from NASCAR has sent ripples through the racing community. Kevin Harvick, a former SHR driver and NASCAR veteran, has shared his reaction to the team’s departure, reflecting on the legacy and the changes it brings.

Harvick’s tenure with SHR was marked by significant achievements, including his 2014 championship win. His reaction to SHR’s closure is one of disbelief and nostalgia, as he reminisces about the team’s success and the collective efforts of its personnel. Harvick has been vocal about the impact of SHR’s management practices and the importance of leadership in steering the team through its final season.

The closure of SHR signifies a major shift in NASCAR’s landscape. For Harvick, it’s an opportunity to acknowledge the end of an era and to appreciate the memories forged during his time with the team. His insights offer a personal perspective on the challenges faced by racing teams and the resilience required to adapt to change.

As the racing world adapts to SHR’s absence, Kevin Harvick’s reflections serve as a reminder of the team’s contributions to NASCAR.
Kelley revealed, “And the decisions that we had to make both professionally and personally to leave Dale Earnhardt Incorporated and everything we knew had been built for the benefit of Dale and I. Knowing that that’s what our dad wanted for us and we were letting a piece of that down … we knew in our hearts that it was a letdown, and we knew Teresa here didn’t want that for us.”

Kelly Earnhardt, daughter of the legendary Dale Earnhardt Sr., grew up surrounded by the exhilarating world of NASCAR. Her father, known as the “Intimidator,” had an immense impact on the sport. However, when it came to racing, Dale Sr. had reservations about his daughter’s involvement.

In a time when racing was predominantly male-dominated, Dale Sr. worried about the risks and physical demands. He cautioned Kelly, saying that racing might not be suitable for girls due to potential leg injuries.

Kelly Earnhardt Miller: Vice-President of JR Motorsports and her Decision Not to Own a Cup Team

Kelly co-owns JR Motorsports, a successful racing team, alongside her brother Dale Jr. The team competes in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and has achieved significant victories over the years. As the vice-president of JR Motorsports, Kelly plays a crucial role in team operations, sponsorships, and strategic decisions. Her business acumen and dedication have helped the team thrive.

Kelly Earnhardt’s journey in NASCAR management led to an interesting decision—one that sets her apart from her father and brother. Despite her family’s deep roots in the sport, Kelly and Dale Jr. chose not to become Cup team owners. Here’s why:

Owning a Cup team requires substantial financial investment. Kelly and Dale Jr. weighed the costs and benefits, recognizing the challenges associated with running a top-tier team.

Instead of venturing into Cup ownership, Kelly and Dale Jr. concentrated their efforts on JR Motorsports. By nurturing their Xfinity Series team, they’ve created a successful platform for developing young talent and competing at a high level.

Picture this: The roar of engines, the smell of burnt rubber, and the adrenaline pumping through Morgan Shepherd’s veins as he hurtles around the track. It’s a typical NASCAR race day, and Shepherd is behind the wheel of his #89 car, aiming for victory. But fate had other plans.

As Shepherd exited the pit road, something caught the attention of fans and fellow drivers alike. Perched on the roof of his car was none other than his steering wheel! Yes, you read that correctly—the very device that allows a driver to control the car had somehow dislodged and found its way to an unconventional location.

Why was a Steering wheel on the top of the NASCAR car?

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA – MARCH 31: Denny Hamlin, driver of the #11 Mavis Tires & Brakes Toyota, leads Martin Truex Jr., driver of the #19 Auto-Owners Insurance Toyota, on the restart to win the NASCAR Cup Series Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway on March 31, 2024 in Richmond, Virginia.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Morgan Shepherd operates on a shoestring budget. His team has only one full-time employee, and that person likely handles multiple roles during race weekends. Imagine the scene: Shepherd’s lone crew member juggling tasks, including attaching the steering wheel, making adjustments, and ensuring the car is race-ready.

Before we delve into the details, let’s address the second piece of tape on the steering wheel. At 12 o’clock, there’s a strip of tape that helps the driver index the wheel. When the car stops in the pits, this tape ensures that the wheels are straight. Tight fender clearances mean that front tire changers need easy access to remove and replace the wheels during pit stops.

The steering wheel on the roof wasn’t Shepherd’s primary wheel. NASCAR teams use two steering wheels over the race weekend—one for crew members to turn the car while pushing it through the garage area (the “crews pushing in neutral” wheel) and another for the driver during the race itself. The crew’s wheel lacks radio buttons or switches and has a larger diameter for better leverage when the car isn’t running (as it lacks power steering).

At JR Motorsports’ recent fan day, I had the opportunity to catch up with Dale Earnhardt Jr., the media personality, businessman, and co-owner of the team. As fans gathered for autographs, podcasts, and fun activities, I asked Earnhardt about the possibility of JRM fielding Cup Series drivers and the challenges they face.

I caught up with Dale Earnhardt Jr. last month at JR Motorsports fan day. Would that fan day ever include JRM Cup Series drivers? Earnhardt said they didn’t land a charter in the latest cycle and he’s not sure JRM will ever field Cup cars. pic.twitter.com/kziRR4SGZV

— Bob Pockrass (@bobpockrass) June 13, 2024

Talking with Bob Pockrass, Dale Earnhardt Jr said, “We’re out of the charter business right now. … The sale of a charter, I would call it a cycle, right? Well, we missed this last cycle. We’ll see what comes down the road. I’m almost feeling like that if I were to ever get involved in the Cup side, it would be like an investment — my personal monetary investment in something current.”

“I would be open to talking to team owners about putting money into a particular singular charter and saying, “Hey, I’m going to park an investment here in this charter. I’m leaving that for my generations down the road, my girls and what have you.” It wouldn’t be anything other than that. So I don’t know if we’ll ever have JR Motorsports physically owning charters, running a race team operating every facet of that. I think that that ship has sailed.” Dale Earnhardt concluded.

Kelley Earnhardt Miller, JRM’s co-owner and vice president, echoed her brother’s sentiments. She confirmed that they’re actively considering Cup racing. The team evaluates options daily, but the absence of a charter remains a hurdle they must overcome.

Interestingly, some fans speculate that Dale Earnhardt Jr is biding his time. Rather than buying a charter outright, he may be waiting for the right opportunity. His name, connections, and experience hold significant value in NASCAR, and attaching them to a charter could be a strategic move.

When asked about JRM’s prospects for fielding Cup cars, Earnhardt expressed uncertainty. He admitted that the team’s lack of a charter complicates matters. While he didn’t rule out the possibility entirely, he emphasized the challenges they face. Cup racing demands substantial resources, and without a charter, JRM’s path remains unclear.

Dale Earnhardt Jr didn’t mince words. He revealed that JRM didn’t secure a charter in the latest cycle. Charters are essential for Cup Series participation, granting teams guaranteed entry into races. Without one, JRM faces an uphill battle to compete at the highest level.
